The “winner takes all” strategy of the past decades has proven that tech companies will “move fast and break things” to prioritize growth. (Facebook's famous motto referred to quickly pushing new innovations even if it meant causing disruption or problems along the way.)

AI companies will not only prioritize profits over risk management but will also likely withhold transparency about potential problems in their AI systems to protect proprietary information and avoid regulation.

The CEOs of American AI companies asking Congress to create new laws to regulate AI are not really asking for the government to restrict and hold them accountable.

Instead, it’s most likely just a clever tactic to appear concerned about the public good, make alliances with Congress, and ensure they get to design their own legislation. This would secure regulatory capture and create legal moats, making it harder for future AI companies to compete with them on equal footing.
