AI Terminology

Understanding the vocabulary of artificial intelligence helps us engage more meaningfully with its implications for our collective future.

AI, Narrow AI

Artificial Intelligence that can only perform specific tasks and lacks the ability to adapt or learn new tasks beyond its programming. Examples include voice assistants, recommendation systems, and image recognition algorithms.

Current AI systems fall within this category

AGI, Artificial General Intelligence

A type of AI that performs a wide range of tasks and abilities, much like a human. AGI would be able to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across different domains, exhibiting common sense reasoning and adaptive problem-solving skills.

This level of AI does not yet exist, but is a major focus of research

ASI, Artificial Superintelligence

Refers to an AGI that surpasses human intelligence, becomes autonomous, and can improve its own code and objectives. An ASI would theoretically be capable of cognitive feats impossible for humans, potentially recursively improving itself at an accelerating rate.

Theoretical concept that forms the basis of many long-term AI safety concerns
